Oh yes!! - We have started our glaze journey to share with you!! A 28 minute journey that will help you get going with the basics of glazes.... without any fear ;P

And very important!! - You can choose subtitles in dutch or english >> go to CC in the video!

We start this journey simple, we took a transparant and a white gloss glaze to make a transparent green, blue and orange. And we have used a glossy white base to make an opaque glossy green, blue and orange glaze.

A simple way to learn how to start making your own glazes on a very easy going way.

Just a side note so you know: I have ecxema all my life, so that is why in close up mode my two precious little hands sometimes look like they are 80 instead of 50 ;)

So what do you need to join this glaze adventure, or to make the start:

  • A good mask mask with P3 filters (explained in the tutorial)

  • A good digital or analogue scale with 2 decimal places

  • spoons in 2/3 sizes

  • thrown or handbuild bisc samples to fire the glaze sample batches see tutorial here!

  • wet cloth

  • little containers to make little batches of glazes (we make 10 gram batches) so we do not spill a lot of materials...

  • colouring agents - we used: Copper carbonate, cobalt oxide and orange stain.

  • Glaze powder of base glaze transparent gloss (we fire to cone 6 - 1220 degrees C)

  • Glaze powder of base glaze white gloss

  • Coloring oxides like cobalt and copper

  • Coloring  ceramic stains (orange) or any color you want to sample

  • syringe to add the water to the dry little batches of glaze in ml. in a precision way.

  • If needed a calculator ;)

The glaze tests must be fired to cone 6 (1220 degrees C) and will be listed before the end of July 2025.

Here some pictures of masks and scales that can be used.

The half face mask (without the filters).

The filters:

And the scale used in this tutorial, but if you want to spend more money for more accurately. See the second scale :)

Just an example of an Ohaus scale, but Kern and more analogue 2 decimal place scales will do fine :)

Please share your glaze experiences and findings on the platform and in the closed and private FB group of Le Noyer Noiur - Clay Community :)
